What the fund covers

The Athlete Fund covers entry costs for supported trail and ultra races when financial or other access barriers make entering difficult. The support is attached to a specific race and distance. If your application is selected, Tierra Libre Run works with the race partner to arrange your entry through its registration process.

The fund also helps you navigate the details around that entry. That includes understanding course expectations, registration deadlines, and practical race day logistics. You can ask questions about the race you are preparing for and the steps you need to complete before you run.

Choose a supported race

Start with the supported race list. Choose a race and distance that fit your current training, the time you have to prepare, and your plans for getting there. The date, terrain, course requirements, and travel involved all matter to that choice.

Tell us why this particular race matters to you now. We want to understand what the entry would make possible and how you plan to prepare for it. A thoughtful choice gives us a clearer picture than a long list of previous races.

Apply in your own words

The application asks about your relationship with trail running, why you chose the race, what support would help, and how you want to contribute beyond race day. Your answers help staff understand both the barrier the entry would remove and whether the race fits your preparation and plans.

The form includes 5 required written responses and 1 conditional response. Your draft saves to your account, so you can return to it while you work through the questions. Staff read every application. Submitting an application does not guarantee funding, and your dashboard shows its current status.

From selection to registration

If selected, you complete a registration packet and funding waiver in your account. Tierra Libre Run then confirms the entry through the race partner’s registration process. Application approval and a confirmed race entry are separate steps. Follow the registration instructions in your dashboard so the information needed for your entry is complete.

As race day approaches, use the course information, deadlines, and logistics to guide your preparation. If your plans change, communicate early. Supported entries are reserved for athletes who intend to use them, and advance notice helps us respond when someone can no longer race.

Common questions

Can I apply for my first trail race?

Yes. You do not need a long trail racing history. Your application should explain why you chose the race and how it fits your preparation.

Can you reimburse an entry I have already paid for?

The fund does not reimburse entry purchases. Apply for a currently supported race and distance so we can arrange the entry through the race partner.

Can I ask for other support?

The form lets you request a mentor and describe accessibility, equipment, travel, scheduling, or other needs. Sharing those needs does not promise additional funding.

Does this fund cover coach certification?

Coach certification and cohort learning are offered through the Coaching Fund as a separate program.
